The truth about motivation and where to find it

Right, enough is enough.

One of the most common questions I am asked as a personal trainer is something along the lines of the following:

Where do you find your motivation?

How do you stay so motivated all of the time?

I’ve lost my motivation already (one week into trying). 

Guys, what do you think motivation is exactly? It’s not magic fairy dust. 

I couldn’t even be arsed with this photoshoot.

It’s not like in the movies, or adverts, or even social media for that matter – you don’t just have a moment where an incredibly heroic song comes on and you find the power to fight your way to the gym all of a sudden.

I could give you all kinds of tips, I could talk to you about SMART goals, I could tell you to hire me as your personal trainer but at the end of the day the motivation can only come from YOU.

That’s right…YOU.

The sad truth is, social media has made us a little naive but quite frankly I’m sick of blaming it on that – YOU have to take some responsibility for where you are right now.

You have to look at how you’re feeling, you have to find a solution to help you get to wherever it is you want to be and you have to work bloody hard at it. 

Do you think I wake up at 5am every morning with a rocket up my ass that flies me to the gym with smiles and perfect hair? (my hair is never perfect) Fuck no. 

The dark mornings kill me, the thought of training when I have a 2 hour gap in a 14 hour day does NOT excite the hell out of me and I certainly do not enjoy training when I simply don’t want to. 

Stop blaming where you are on ‘not having enough time’, or ‘having too much on at work’ or ‘you don’t have the motivation’ because you want to know what you’re really saying…?


And you know what, that’s okay – don’t do it.

Don’t go to the gym, don’t look after your body, your health, your wellbeing, your nutrition…whatever it is you think you should be doing that you’re not.


If you really do want to make a change and you’re sick of the way you feel, you’re confidence is at an all time low or you’re terrified of being a mother/father who can’t keep up with their own child – THEN USE THAT.

That is your motivation.

I’m not saying it’s that simple, I’m not saying snap out of it but what I am saying is that in order to make change…YOU (and only you) have to start making changes. 

That’s the simple part.

And if you can’t do that on your own but genuinely really want to, then seek help. The same way I would seek help if I was stuck – I hardly do anything on my own and thank fuck I don’t, I’d be stuck in a hole somewhere but one thing I know for sure is I wouldn’t be where I am today.

So stop making excuses, we’re smart people, we can figure it out, and if we can’t, there’s plenty people out there that can.
